From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were; I have not seen
As others saw; I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I loved, I loved alone.
Then- in my childhood, in the dawn
Of a most stormy life- was drawn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still
From the torrent, or the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that round me rolled
In its autumn tint of gold,
From the lightning in the sky
As it passed me flying by,
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.
Thesis:Poe uses imagery, tone and a first person point of view to communicate to his audience an emotional understanding of the bitterness of his past experiences.
1) What do you think Poe is speaking of when he references "a demon" at the end of the poem?
2) In the second last line, Poe writes "when the rest of Heaven was blue". Why do you think the author chose the colour blue? What kind of tone does it set? Would it set a different mood if another colour was chosen?
3) Do you notice a change in tone throughout the piece?
4) What line stands out to you most or conveys a different tone than the rest of the poem?
5) How else could this piece be interpreted?
6) According to the poem, Poe experiences a feeling of being alone. What type of events does Edgar Allan Poe express difficulty with experiencing throughout his upbringing?

I just wanted to mention to all of you that you will be able to cut and paste to your blog much more easily if you paste into the "edit html" tab rather than the regular "compose" tab. Let me know in class if you are unsure what I mean by this.
ReplyDeleteLet's all thank Mia for being brave enough to go first!
I just wanted to say this Poem is amazing! regardless of how sad and depressing, it is very deep. He had a hard life yet he is still able to touch people with poems such as there. Mia I think you did an amazing job :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for going first Mia! You did amazing! :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with what Jamie said about the chosen colour of blue. I think it may represent that even though the rest of the world was normal and moving forward (referring to the sky being blue is the norm), he was still stuck in his own world of past experiences that continue to haunt him.
Though I see what Jamie and Linda are saying... blue is also associated with sadness. It could be another way to look at it. But then, it would be much too obvious for a demon to be found in sadness. Or would it? I'm not sure about my opinion on this yet.
ReplyDeleteThe poem is great. i never knew how a child growing up without parents would feel. During his child hood it must of been stressfull and he didn't play games like children did. I think that when he is sad he thniks about his child hood which was not too good. Since he has been with out parents for a long time it will be hard to be happy again. i agree with what Keenan said about the poem.
ReplyDeleteIn reference to question 2, I think that Poe may have chosen the colour blue to describe Heaven simply because the sky is blue. When people refer to Heaven, they refer to it as being above us, sometimes even in the clouds. When Poe looked above him and into the sky and saw the demon in the clouds, the blue sky would have surrounded it. I know it seems like an obvious answer, but that's what came to my mind when I read it.
ReplyDeleteI think you did a really great job Mia! :)
ReplyDeleteYour interpretation of this poem was well thought out in my opinion! I've heard this poem before and I don't think I ever drew some of the conclusions that were mentioned today in the discussion.
About the sky colour question, my first thought was the same as Sam's since blue is typically considered a sad colour. I also see where Madison, Linda and Jamie are coming from though and it's difficult to know exactly what Poe meant by it in this poem.
Overall, great choice of poem. :)
although i did orignally say that Blue was associated with calmness. I believe Sam is right that blue can also bes associated with sadness. I think there are many ways to look at this poem. I think that they way someone looks at this poem is the same as Poe was saying about people looking at life differently :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great great start to student led poetry. Keep it up and let's hear from everyone!
