Hey Mike sorry about walking out on your poetry seminar today. What i did hear of it i thought it was great :). Great choice of poem. It was an amazing writing and great questions :).
really good poem Mike. I really think that the poem describes who smart people are in terms of looks which was discussed in class. But i agree with what the whole class said about what it meant. Also someone said that "some people are smart but they dress nice and don't have messy hair" which is true not all people that are smart are like that. you have some that dress really nice and they are smart.
When I heard the poem being read out, my initial opinion was that I didn't like it because it was so stereotypical but as we discussed it and dug deeper into the meaning of the poem, it was actually pretty interesting. This poem sends out the message, although not directly, that geniuses aren't necessarily people with the stereotypical traits of a genius and that every single person has their own specialty area where they can call themselves a genius.
I also agree with Linda. When I first heard this poem, I thought it was very stereotypical, and it was hard for me to enjoy it at that point. However, once we started to discuss the possibility that Twain could have written the poem to prove the point that anyone can be a genius, and that they don't always have the image of a "smart person" that most of us assume they do, my opinion changed. Overall, I thought it was a really good poem.
In reference to question 1, I don't think the poem would have made as much of an impact without the repetition. I think the continuous use of the word "genius" and the different contexts that it was used in is what made the poem so ironic, and also somewhat controversial.
