The Road Not Taken - Jamie

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference

By: Robert Frost

Thesis: Frost used metaphor, tone and point of view to raise questions about the consequences of our choices.

Questions:

1) Explain the significance of the use of the road metaphor in this poem?
2) What is the tone of this poem? Would it make a difference if the opposite tone was used?
3) Was this poem meant to be taken literally or metaphorically?
4) What point of view was used in this poem? Do you think Frost chose this point of view on purpose?
5) What was Frost's purpose for writing this poem?

  1. I think you really did a good job on this poem :)

    and I know what you mean about how you said you hated poetry, before all these assignments I absolutely hated it, I would actually try my hardest to get out of any of my poetry assignments, still hate writing them but not scared to analyze them.

    Though again really good job, and an excellent choice on the choice of poem :D

  2. I believe the use of the road is more towards doing the right thing instead of wrong. Its more about taking the initiative to do the right thing that may be more difficult instead of cutting corners and doing the easiest path. The easiest path might not be the right one but as human beings most people are likely to take the easiest way out of a situation hence the road being less travelled would be the much more dificult path. If two paths could be taken to get to the same destination most people would take the easier of the two when on the outside looking in.

    I mean a situation could be telling a lie when you're about to get in trouble. Its a lot harder to confess the wrong doing... the road that is less travelled by and in the end the confession makes all the difference. As opposed to lying which is easier of the two paths. Getting in trouble is avoided but its still wrong to tell a lie. So this poem could be a contrast of right and wrong and saying that doing the right thing or taking the path that is less travelled by makes all the difference

  3. I think that this poem is really good and a great job on your presentation. I think that the word "road" in the poem refers to right and wrong. I think of it that way because some people in life do bad things and will continue to do things like breaking in to homes, robbing people, and many more criminal acts. Once they are released from prison they will keep on doing the things they did before, all because they didn't have good parents or did not want to go to school for a better future. These people will only remember how to commit crimes since they grew up in that neighbourhood , but there are some that want to change their life for the better, while some still do criminal acts. The poem represents more of doing the right thing as Keenan and the class mentioned . There is different results for people cause one will change his life and make things right while the other just doesn't care and continues doing wrong things, so it is not always the case where everyone is trying to make things right.
